Motithang Higher Secondary School Maximizes Learning with New Sports Equipment
Students at Motithang Higher Secondary School are making the most of their sports classes while learning the fundamentals and joy of sports, guided by the school’s School Sports Instructor (SSI). With newly provided athletic equipment, footballs, and bocce, students are actively engaged in hands-on learning as part of the Unified Champion Schools (UCS) program.

Motithang H.S.S is one of the nine pilot schools where Special Olympics Bhutan began implementing the UCS program in March 2025. The school was selected for this pilot project because of its commitment to inclusion and its status as one of the few inclusive schools in the country.
The UCS program is a global Special Olympics initiative that uses sports, youth leadership, and whole-school engagement to create inclusive learning environments. In Bhutan, it aims to empower students, teachers, and school leaders to embrace inclusion and create opportunities for all children to learn, play, and succeed together.
Through this program, Motithang H.S.S students are not only developing sports skills but also learning teamwork, leadership, and social skills in an environment that values every learner. Sports provide lessons and experiences that books alone cannot, offering students a healthy break from academics while exploring new equipment and enjoying physical activities.
“Sports teach lessons that classrooms cannot—teamwork, confidence, and joy in learning. Seeing students explore and enjoy these activities is truly inspiring,”
By actively engaging in UCS activities, Motithang H.S.S is contributing to the broader vision of creating inclusive schools across Bhutan, where every student, with or without disabilities, can feel valued, respected, and included.
