About Us

Inclusion in Action

Special Olympics Bhutan is a national movement that uses the power of sport to open hearts, create opportunity, and build an inclusive Bhutan for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). As an accredited program under Special Olympics International and an affiliate of the Bhutan Paralympic Committee, we work to ensure that every individual—regardless of ability—has the chance to participate, compete, and thrive.

Rooted in Bhutan’s values of compassion and equity, we bring together athletes, families, communities, and partners to champion dignity, confidence, and belonging. Since our founding in 2009, we have grown from a small initiative into a dynamic, nationwide platform for inclusion. In 2024, under the leadership of Dasho Dechen Wangmo, President of Special Olympics Bhutan, the organization began a new chapter focused on strategic expansion, stronger systems, and deeper community impact.

Our Purpose

Individuals with intellectual disabilities often face barriers that limit their ability to participate fully in society—barriers shaped by stigma, limited access to sport, and lack of awareness. We exist to change that. Our purpose is simple yet powerful: to transform lives through sport and create communities where everyone belongs.

Through our programs, athletes discover their strengths, build friendships, and gain confidence that reaches far beyond the playing field. Communities become more understanding, schools become more inclusive, and young people learn to lead with empathy.

Our Impact

Special Olympics Bhutan has touched countless lives across the country. Athletes discover joy and confidence, families find hope, and communities learn to celebrate ability over limitation. Schools are adopting inclusive programs, partnerships are growing, and more young leaders are stepping forward to champion inclusion.

Every event, every training session, and every athlete’s achievement moves us closer to a Bhutan where people of all abilities stand on equal ground.

Our Values

  • Inclusion — Everyone deserves a place to belong.

  • Respect — We honor the dignity and individuality of every athlete.

  • Empowerment — We help individuals discover their strength and leadership.

  • Joy — Sport is a celebration of courage, effort, and community.

  • Collaboration — We work across sectors to build sustainable, inclusive change.

What We Do

We use the power of sport to open doors, build friendships, and celebrate every ability. Through inclusive programs, we help athletes grow stronger—on and off the field.

Inclusive Sports

We provide year-round sports training and competitions for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Health & Wellness

We work with health professionals and institutions to offer screenings, education, and referrals so athletes can lead healthy and active lives.

Youth Leadership

Young people are at the heart of our movement. We train students to become advocates for inclusion in their communities.

Training & Partnerships

We collaborate with teachers, coaches, schools, sports bodies, and government agencies to build an inclusive ecosystem

It is a movement of unity, courage, and hope.

We envision a future where inclusive sports and wellness opportunities are available in every school and community across Bhutan. With strengthened partnerships, trained professionals, and expanded outreach, we continue to build a society where every person—regardless of ability—can live with pride, purpose, and possibility.
